Breakfast Club Reports: Week of 11th November
Breakfast Club PDX – 11.19.2024
Per Scott’s Post: We had another Breakfast Club for the records here in Portland, running out of seats for the first time which was a welcomed challenge. Thanks to the good folks at Proud Mary Coffee for being our gracious hosts from day one and always accommodating our evergrowing group.
We had a healthy balance of new folks and stalwarts this morning, including jeff weithman Justin Kent Justin Davis Allison Henry Aver George Rogers Bri Brankin Kara Place Chelsea Place Jake Terrell Jessica Brandes Kingrey Brittni Busch Brian Mark shannon holt and my co-host Nina Sers. It's been such a joy getting to know these folks and it's refreshing to hear so many conversation points and shared experiences that remind me we are in this together.
There was a lot of getting to know each other and connecting dots on mutuals, but a few things that bubbled up:
• marketing for marketing agencies
• how being laid off isn't as taboo as it was 10 years ago
• the catharsis of manual labor and seeing the fruits of your efforts
• the joys of not running the show and being a great no 2
• how that no 2 is so vital when you ARE running the show
• the importance of writing your own dream RFP and job description
• the uptick in investors deploying capital right now
• what the fed rate corrections and elections mean for Portland real estate
• and is any hiring *really* getting done before the holidays?
And for all those there, please feel free to chime in on what I missed!
We do this every Tuesday 9am at Proud Mary on Alberta. We are part of the growing Breakfast Club community that Ben Dietz started in Brooklyn which has now grown to daily happenings in cities across the globe, with more sprouting up weekly. No talking points, no agenda, no pitching, everyone pays their own way, and everyone is invited –– especially you. Hope to see you at the next one.

Breakfast Club Report 11.20.24:
As I wrote: I forgot the group photo (there were 36 of us)
Folks around me talked hip replacement, podcast networks , counterespionage, coming home from college, spending a career in strategy ( and having a twin brother who does as well) hiring people who don’t know what strategy is, caffeine limitations strategies, friendship bracelets, operating a restaurant in Madrid ( Rapaz), statement glasses, media training for rock bands, producing a comedy sex podcast, how movements get started, Breakfast Club London, when misspelling turns into nicknames, living in Nashville, having ‘regular energy,’ moving to London on Brexit Day, Jason Kreher's legendary ‘Schaudenfreezers’ book, the foibles of modern parenting, going to Amsterdam for the first time, having Oreos for breakfast, when cities hit a tipping point for cycling, collapsible bikes, Salomon Sportstyle, Nike being dead, freelancing vs full timing, Donald Judd’ing a loft full of furniture, the getting your kids internships, the John and Alice Coltrane home, experiences that get you out of your head as a responsible adult, Julian Casablancas singing on the roof next door.
The gang was me, Sundi Brewer-Griffin, Ishita Sharma, Nimrah Khanyari, Marissa Dubin, Cara Cannella, George Crichlow, Ben Jenkins, Rita Juárez, Montana Knudsen, Paula Herrera, Stephen Penta, Zachary Mallard, Eva McCloskey, Nick Bodor, Dan Burt, Travis Pomposello, Rose Lobelson, Hannah Levine, Thomas Cissel, Julie Stein, Mimi Richman, Ebenezer Bond, Marc Weissman, Matthew Silver, Krish Raja, Kalil Greenberg, Howard Gray, Jared Ray Johnson, Brianna Hawkins, Charles Bane III, Cheryl Miller Houser, Leann Abad Theophilus Wells IV, Vita Haas, and Jillian Wolf.
We do this every Wednesday (including next one - the day before Thanksgiving, if you're in town) at Le Crocodile Restaurant in the Wythe Hotel. Come hang sometime. Everyone pays their own way. And everyone's invited, especially you.

Breakfast Club San Francisco 11/20/24
At breakfast club NYC I'd see Ben on his phone and think, is he texting?
But he's not texting. He's taking some of the most extraordinarily detailed and provocative recap notes I have ever read. In that spirit, overheard this week:
Club culture is dead. What brick and mortar would you open in SF right now? A flower shop with pie. European markets. A multimodal space. Bowling Alone. Beauty marketing is the best bullshit—"We found a nut in a forest 1,000 years ago just for your skin." Nonprofit budgeting tip—save a % of grants for upkeep. Sourcing machinery. Bring manufacturing back. Internet dot org. Cultural implications to tech adoption. How do we teach having hard conversations. Open to Debate podcast. Everybody's algo is different. Holochain. Truth in media. House of Beautiful Business. A club where the walls move. Loudspring in Oakland. House of Purple Uni.
If you like stuff like this, drop by. No pitching. Everyone's welcome. Pay your own way.

Breakfast Club Downtown Brooklyn 11/21/24
per Kat’s post: Today’s gathering was hosted by Joyce de Lemos on the rainiest day New York has seen in months (EVERY PARK IN THE CITY IS GRATEFUL).
We talked about non-traditional recipes for holidays, bar mitzvahs, our 15 mins of viral fame, the lack of diversity in business leadership, being the messenger of bad news, Bedstuy vs Park Slope, getting really good at being in front of the camera, social media teams that make your content better, buying land in Tanzania, the Jaguar rebrand, flying to London the day after the election, asking hard questions in interviews that get you the answers you need, showing up to conferences because you have to (even the stiff + boring ones).
Our crew included ari levine Joy Martinez Jennifer Rusk Piers Fawkes Karen Labuca Seth Hillinger Craig Bromberg Gavon O. Broomfield Joan De Jesús Kellie S. Claire Arendse Nadia Nascimento. A special shout out to Steph Clarke, our BC host from Melbourne who's been able to join so regularly recently.

So with gratitude for such lovely minds who came together to meet and brain dance with strangers.
