Breakfast Clubbing #50
W/C 7th April: BC is ON in PDX, Paris, Miami, Hamptons, Hudson, Wmsburg, CDMX, SF, Vienna, DC, DTBK, Manhattan, Sydney, Melbourne (Richmond) and SOMa (NJ)
Hi all.
Coming up on 23 years ago I moved to Sydney for a job. I stayed a year, traveling a little in Oz, but not as much as I’d have liked. I returned to NYC and have never gone back to Sydney again, which I regret to say.
So it was a thrill to hear that Elisha Akhtar had gone ahead and taken the reins on a BC chapter there - the third in Australia but the first from somebody who hadn’t attended in Brooklyn first (
and I worked together for years so he doesn’t count in that tally). It’ll be fun to see what Sydneysiders do with the institutional. It’ll star flat whites, I’d wager.I say it to say that this little community - now over 2000 subscribers each Monday) is constantly growing and evolving in ways I never anticipated, but that I am extremely into. European superchargers Amy Daroukakis and Charla Caponi are hitting the road spreading the gospel - Amy soon to Asia, Charla as a special guest in Paris this week - we’re doing another Breakfast Club Happy Hour in NYC on April 24th (more on that soon). And there’s lots more in the works.
So - Come hang! Better yet, bring a friend. Or if you’re not in NYC, start your own happy hour. Or your own Breakfast. Everyone’s invited to join - and everyone’s invited to host.
Especially you.
The Breakfast Club Esprit de Corps:
* Everyone’s invited - especially you.
* Feel free to share, bring friends, colleagues, family, anyone.
* No agenda, no required buy-in, no need to RSVP. And no pitches.
* Everyone pays their own way.
* Everyone is welcome to subscribe.

Barcelona 2.4.25 Report
Per Nicole’s WhatsApp message: “In our cozy group of 5 in Barcelona today, we discussed if life is game/simulation, and books on gaming theory; if you believe you live one life, how do you live the most inside of it (do you learn how other people live theirs, do you say yes to everything); what's success, really; YouTube as a powerful (and hard) tool; OpenAI's new image creation; Spanish well-intended but loophole-ridden laws; and a upcoming music platform mixing from Spotify's former CIO. ♥️ One of my favourites so far.

Williamsburg 4.2.25 Report
Per my post: In my zone we talked Spacemen 3, Massive Attack, getting into things after ‘their time,’ cricket sweaters, going Bertram Wooster mode, Brands&Culture, Substack lacking gatekeepers, minor genius, self help books disguised as zines, the Artists Way, being represented by Pace Gallery, stopping the scroll, things that are the worst that also rule, throwing AI all over Partiful, getting invited to your first ever seder, AI portraits on dating apps, dinner party dinner cards, the artist(?!) Rex Detiger, the Breakfast Club word cloud, that Gen X creativity is dead article in The New York Times, the ON_Discourse AI summit, newsletters that are 100 percent written by AI, creeping on the Breakfast Club ‘business model,’ the VICE Media diaspora, interviewing all over the place, bring you daughter to breakfast day, branded condos in Miami, cities designed for conspicuous consumption, intentionally buying assets that depreciating, locking in your student loan debt, turning 27, finding opportunity when it is, not where you expect to find it, products needing to be good, different and repeatable, the state of comedy today, the commercial challenges of ‘Nets, Mets and Jets’, no one ever getting fired for buying IBM, when can a New York Knicks, Inc. town become a Nets town, converting Bensonhurst, deep-deepfakes, a big hologram horse and lots more.

Milan 3.4.25 Report:
Per Charla’s Post:
MEGA Art Fair and the fabulous Mattia Pozzoni, Marta Orsola Sironi, and Mauro Mattei - TEP—TEP hosted our Breakfast Club this week, aligning with our goal of offering new experiences to our BC’ers each month.
Like Breakfast Club, MEGA ART Fair provides an experience and a gathering place, offering a different way to engage with art. The artworks displayed were part of a curated exhibition, with galleries from Mexico to Zimbabwe showcasing artists' work.
My fav artwork was by Giuditta Branconi. Her vividness and expressiveness caught my attention. Additionally, I found using rags as her material particularly impressive, reflecting her humble upbringing. (Thanks to Mattia Pozzoni for sharing her background with me 😊).
This edition was spread out somewhat, but what I overheard or partook in was:
▪️ Art Art Art – location, location, location
▪️ Olympics – Cortina, winning and losing pitches/ bids
▪️ Energy healers
▪️ 6 degrees of separation
▪️ And the ongoing drama of Canada - politics – Trump 😩
Stay tuned for next month’s Breakfast Club: Wednesday, May 21st Golab
Reminder: Everyone is invited. Especially you.

Per James’s Post: We had a tight crew of regulars plus a couple new friends and even got a few drop-bys from regulars who were at Artie's for other get-togethers.
As ever, it's an hour or two of conversation amidst all the craziness of 2025.

When gentrification goes wrong and all you get is more nail salons, the drama of kids travel sports teams, being too old for serious athletic endeavors, can jews golf?, is Kevin James an everyman hunk?, finding religion in midlife, keeping kosher in the Deep South, that Gen X article in the Times, writing jokes for a living, how NYC newstands became museums of Maxim backissues before ceasing to sell magazines at all, the disappearance of movie theaters, what do college kids do for fun?, piracy funds seclusion, what to watch on tv, the absurd range of NYC stadium grub, and hating The Doors but loving Val Kilmer
